These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Backlist iOS application and the backlist.app website (collectively, the "Service") operated by Backlist ("we," "us," or "our"). By downloading or using the Service, you agree to these Terms.
You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. By using the Service, you represent that you meet this requirement. If you are under 18, you represent that a parent or legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms on your behalf.
You may use Backlist without an account, but certain features (including cloud sync and SMS alerts) require registration. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us immediately at hello@backlist.app if you suspect unauthorized use.
Free tier. Core features — including shelf management and reading logs — are free.
Paid subscription. SMS release alerts and related notification features require an active subscription. Subscriptions are offered at $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year (or the equivalent local currency prices shown at purchase). Pricing is subject to change with 30 days' notice.
Billing. Subscriptions are billed monthly or annually through the Apple App Store, depending on the plan you choose. Your subscription renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current billing period. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in your iPhone's Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions.
Refunds. All purchases are processed by Apple and subject to Apple's refund policy. We do not issue refunds directly. To request a refund, visit reportaproblem.apple.com.
Free trials. New users may be offered a 30-day free trial with no payment method required. During the trial, users receive full access to all features including SMS release-day alerts. If you do not subscribe before the trial ends, you will enter a 7-day grace period during which alerts continue and the app remains accessible. If you have not subscribed by the end of the grace period, access to the app will be paused and alerts will stop. Your shelf data, ratings, reading history, and other content are preserved and remain available immediately upon subscription at any time. If you purchase a subscription before the trial or grace period ends, any unused portion is forfeited.

By enabling SMS alerts, you consent to receive text messages from us at the phone number you provide. Standard message and data rates from your carrier may apply. You can opt out at any time by replying STOP to any message or by disabling alerts in the app. We are not responsible for delays or failures in SMS delivery caused by carriers or other third parties.
The Service and its original content, features, and functionality are owned by Backlist and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. The Backlist name, logo, and wordmark are our trademarks. You may not use them without our prior written permission.
Book metadata, cover images, and author information displayed in the Service are sourced from third-party databases. We make no claim of ownership over that content.
You retain ownership of reading notes, ratings, and other content you create in the Service ("User Content"). By using the Service, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to store and display your User Content solely to operate and improve the Service. We do not sell or share your User Content with third parties.
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of viruses or other harmful components. Release date information is sourced from third parties and may be inaccurate or delayed.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Backlist and its owners, employees, and agents shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including lost profits or data, arising out of or related to your use of the Service, even if advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for any claim arising from these Terms or the Service shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or $10, whichever is greater.
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Backlist and its owners from any claims, damages, losses, and costs (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your violation of these Terms or your use of the Service.
We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time, with or without notice, for conduct that we believe violates these Terms or is harmful to other users, us, or third parties. Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination (including intellectual property, disclaimers, and limitation of liability) will survive.
We reserve the right to modify or discontinue the Service (or any part of it) at any time, with or without notice. We are not liable to you or any third party for any modification, suspension, or discontinuation.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising from these Terms or the Service shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in San Francisco County, California, and you consent to personal jurisdiction in those courts.
We may revise these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated Terms on this page with a revised date. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the new Terms.
